Chapter Twenty-Nine

The next morning, finding nothing else wrong, the hospital discharges me. The consensus of the doctors and my husband is that I inadvertently took too much of my heart medication. I suppose it’s possible, sometimes I’m so distracted. Regardless, I take comfort that it was caused by a stupid accident rather than something mortally wrong with me.

It’s ten thirty a.m. when we get home and Daniel insists on helping me into the house. I bristle because he’s treating me like an invalid and I feel fine. In fact, I feel pretty good after getting a good night’s sleep.

“Where’s Jonah?” I say when I don’t find him in his room.

“Eden took him to the park so you’d have some quiet time when you got home. She’ll be back around two.”

“I wanted to see him.”

“I didn’t know how long it was going to take at the hospital, so I asked her to go. Why don’t you get some rest?”

“I slept for over ten hours in the hospital,” I say with a modicum of irritation in my voice. “I’m fine, Daniel, really.”

He nods. “You gave us all a good scare. You can’t blame me for being worried.”

I walk to him and put my arms around his neck. “I’m sorry. I don’t mean to be so cranky. It’s been a rough couple of days.”

I go upstairs to take a shower. When I come down, my sweet husband has prepared lunch for me — Salad Niçoise, my favorite. We sit and have a leisurely meal together talking about a million things including me being more vigilant about my medication. I soon change the subject by telling him the latest news from the gallery.

First, I recap all the nonsense having to do with handling Roberto. Then I tell him about the new shows coming up but don’t say anything about my father and the blonde. It only makes my father look bad and frankly, I don’t want to talk about it. Bottom line, Sam Petrosian is a wonderful father but a lousy husband. Based on the fights I overheard between my parents when I was a kid, I’m pretty sure my father has been cheating on my mother from day one.

To keep the conversation from returning to me and my health, I tell Daniel about Der Pflug.

“He’s the art world’s new wunderkind,” I say. “Neville is hoping to snag him for his first New York show.”

“Der Pflug? His name means the plough,” says my husband, holding up his phone showing me Google Translate. “Why would an artist call himself a plough?”

I laugh and shake my head. “Most artists are eccentric.” It’s nearly two and we hear a noise coming from the lower level. It’s Eden and Jonah. I skip down the stairs to help her in with the stroller. Before the outside door is even closed, I pick my son up and wrap my arms around his little body. He smells amazing.

“How are you feeling?” says Eden as she puts her things down. She’s out of her burlap sack dress now and back into her sweats.
